Born in Grenada, Hughson grew up with a love for rhythm and roots music. Raised in an Evangelical church, he had the opportunity to play piano, drums, bass, and steelpan, and came to appreciate the value of the musicians’ role in helping to open the doors to spiritual journey. He began playing reggae, calypso and soca at age 13, which became a lifelong love. He moved to Montreal at 18, and was introduced to the Gospel and Soul music of North America through the brilliant Medad Ernest, who had a profound and lasting influence on Hughson’s musical journey. From 2002 to 2005, he was a part of the Assassin Sound System one of the top reggae sound systems out of Montreal. Being immersed in Shona music since early 2006, after moving west to Salt Spring Island, BC, Hughson is grateful to be learning from such a rhythmically intricate tradition. |
