» Tall, Tall Tree

Tall Tall Tree   words & music Susan Cogan cp 2010

I walked out today noticing the rain
And the sound the birdies make had me turn my face to the sky
And I could see the power lines and the buildings all around
Then I heard the sound of some boys at play in the schoolyard way
When suddenly I saw the giant standing up so straight
With a trunk so wide I could not believe my eyes
His greenery reached endlessly or several stories high
So I come to stand as closely as I can
I throw my arms around the tree and enter dreaming land
Oh tall tall tree do you feel me
With my arms around your middle while your roots go deep
When I grasped your branch you shook me by the hand
Or was it just a gust of wind  spirit of the land
Oh tall tall tree  tell me do you dream
About the forest deep and green and how it used to be
For a moment we were dreaming endlessly
Me in the primordial forest with the tallest tree on the block
I waken with a shock
The cold cement beneath my feet tells me now to walk away
But tree, I carry you with me.
Inside my deepest longing
You are holding me.
