Artist Statement

This series is about all those Cubans that left and are still leaving their beloved island by sea, sailing away in any thing that floats, but still carrying their own “ Cuba “ with them even if it is only in their hearts. Like many immigrants and the displaced the world over, for most Cubans the new world can be a strange place. As we say over there, ‘Cubans are Cubans wherever they go!’

My impression is that apart from natural curiosity about the world most Cubans would prefer to be able to make a decent living at home without uprooting themselves from everything that is dear and familiar to them. Economically that is not often possible so a lot of Cubanos just create some small space that feels like ‘home’ wherever they land.

These paintings are a modest tribute to all those who are left with only their beloved memories. It is the everyday we take for granted that lingers the longest in our minds. The old broken houses, noisy “barrios”, laundry lines, rumba on the street corner, dominos clacking under the light of a street lamp, swaying palm trees and the scent of the hot summer nights; shouting neighbors and the large families crowded into a living room that always seems to be able to squeeze in one more. This is what I brought with me.
